Things go wrong with small appliances all of the time and it can really rack up a large bill if you replace them every time something small goes wrong with them. If you can, understand how some of the appliances work and the possible problems that you can check for and repair then you can save a lot of money. It is also nice that many appliances will work very similarly, so if you can repair one, you can repair many.
Basic appliance repair is going to start with knowledge of the different appliances. There are three basic types of small appliances out there. There are motor appliances, heating appliances and combination appliances. The basics for appliance repair in each category will be similar, but there are some differences. The motor appliances are going to be the appliances that use electricity and convert it into movement, essentially anything with a motor. These will obviously have moving parts that can get jammed or broken. This leads to more potential problems. The next type of appliances is the heating appliance. This will take electricity and change it into heat. This would be like a toaster or electric griddle. These are generally very simple to deal with, since everything is a little straighter forward. The final type is the combination. These would be things like bread makers, where they have both a motor and a heating element.
Some of the main problems that you will find with small electrical appliances are blown fuses, broken switches or controls, and wiring problems. Most of these problems are minor in the world of appliance repair however, and can be done by you, at home.
Blown fuses are something easy, and generally will be affecting the actual outlet the appliance is plugged into so check it by putting something you know works fine in that outlet and see what happens. If it doesn’t work, then you need to head to your fuse box. Switches and controls are normally pretty simple to take out and should be replaced on most appliances. They are cheap to buy and can be difficult to repair. The only exception to this is if there are wire problems you can see. These loose or grounded wires simply need to be tightened and reattached.
No matter what you are doing with the appliance though, you will want to make sure you unplug it from the wall. Because of the electricity appliance repair can be dangerous, and you don’t feel comfortable please find a professional to assist you.
