Refrigerator Repair: Tips to Repairing your Refrigerator

A refrigerator is generally comprised of two compartments, a thermally insulated compartment and a heat pump. These compartments are then used to transfer heat from the refrigerator to the external environment which in turn cools the contents inside to a below ambient temperature. A cooling gas known as a refrigerant is responsible for drawing heat away which results in the surrounding area being substantially cooler. Refrigerators generally run without problem but every now and then a refrigeration repair problems can arise. Refrigerator repair technicians can be expensive so many people would rather try and diagnose the problem themselves.

The interlock switch is what keeps parts of the refrigerator from continuing to run when the door is opened. Slight malfunctions with this switch can cause the refrigerator to run abnormally. This is an easy situation to fix and many people simply perform this simple refrigerator repair rather than hiring someone. The interlocking switch is present in the refrigerator. Sometimes it is included with the doors light switch and sometimes it is an entirely separate switch. It is generally located near the light switch. It can easily be removed and the wires inside if damaged can be replaced. A refrigerator can make some things too cold and freeze them. This is generally an unwanted problem. The first thing to check is the temperature controller to verify its settings.

Another easy step is to check the condenser at the bottom of the refrigerator and look for any debris or other abnormal signs. Checking the condenser and the evaporator fan motors are also viable options and they can all be easily done without causing major changes in the system. Refrigerators that drip water inside of the unit may have a clogged tube or channel. Refrigerators that are self defrosting get rid of water from the defrost cycle by a tube of channel that makes sure the water drips into a pan at the bottom of the refrigerator. If these channels become clogged or compacted for whatever reason this water now has nowhere to go.

Refrigerator repair can be done at home but individuals should only stick to simple procedures that do not require any alterations of the system.
