Range Repair: What You Need to Know

There may be four or more ranges present on the stove. Each range is generally arranged as a separate system with its own heating element which is each controlled individually. The basic makeup of a heating element is an electrical wire that is insulated by a nonconductive sheath. This is designed in order for heat to be able to pass through sheath but to make sure electricity does not. One of the most common repair problems with a range is due to a defective element, a bad switch or some type of loose connection. The heating system is predominately a very simple circuit and it is generally easy to repair.

There are a few simple things that anyone can try for range repair. The first step is to isolate the problem. Determine whether it is one range or burner that is not working or if there is several or if none of them are working. When attempting to perform any type of range repair it is very important to unplug or shut off the power to the appliance to prevent the possibility of an electrical shock. As mentioned previously each range contains a heating element and this is generally the best place to start troubleshooting for range repair.

Individuals need to remove the heating element from its position on the stove top. This is generally relatively simple to do and the element can generally be lifted from the side of the range and pulled out. The next step is to inspect the heating element for any obvious signs of damage. Corrosion, warping or damage to the insulation sheath can all cause problems with the working capacity of the range and generally that means the heating element will need to be replaced. Some individuals performing range repair may also feel comfortable with testing the resistance of the heating element or performing tests to determine whether a grounded or shorted element is present.

As mentioned before this is one of the simplest range repair techniques. It is important to also remember safety. When the simple range repair tips do not reveal an answer it may be necessary to call a professional in order to prevent further damage to the system.
