Almost all of our appliances these days require electricity and some of them are purely electric such as some stoves, cook tops and ovens. These appliances generally won’t have a motor or anything else, simply electric coils or heating elements. Because of this they can seem tricky to repair, but often times they are just as easy, if not easier to fix than many gas appliances.
The first step in doing any electric appliance repair is to make sure that the power to the appliance is either shut off or that it is unplugged. This can be done from the circuit breaker or fuse box. Skipping this small step can have huge repercussions. Anything, from a minor shock to a massive jolt of electricity, that could cause serious burns and possibly a heart attack. So make sure that you shut the power off. The only exception to this rule is if you are testing a wire for power. Sometimes it is necessary to check a wire and make sure electricity is getting to that particular wire. This should be done with extreme caution and care.
Once you have disconnected the appliance with the power source you can begin your search for problems. Many times the power source is the problem, either the appliance came unplugged or it blew a fuse so check those options first. Assuming that isn’t it you should begin looking for any loose or stray wires inside the appliance. These wires could be anywhere, but look around the heating elements and power cords. Also inspect the power cord to make sure there are no bare wires showing. If you see a wire that is bare, stripped or exposed, you will need to try and reattach it, assuming you can see where it goes. This is pretty simple and normally just requires a wire stripper and your fingers. Strip a little bit of insulation off of the wire and twist it back together with the other end. That should do the trick. You could also look into wire connectors at your local hardware store.
If you can’t seem to locate the problem, you may want to contact an electric appliance repair professional. They should be able to diagnose the problem much faster and efficiently that you can after your initial check. They also will have access to the parts and tools needed to repair anything major that is wrong with your electric appliance. If you are ever unsure and hesitant about doing your own electric appliance repair, don’t do it. Simply call the professionals in. It is better to be safe than potentially injure yourself badly for an appliance.
